DON’T LET THE HOLIDAYS BE A PAIN IN THE FOOT

Holidays are the most wonderful time of the year but can also prove to be a very demanding time of the year, especially when it comes to your feet and lower body.  Most people will increase their activities substantially during the holidays whether it be while decorating, cooking and baking, shopping, or taking part in holiday celebrations, all of which require excessive periods of walking and time spent on your feet.  Ill-fitting and new shoes are contributing factors and can significantly increase the chances of new holiday foot pain and lower body discomfort but can also cause old foot pain to flare up.

OSTEOPOROSIS PREVENTION

10 OF THE MOST COMMON PAINFUL FOOT CONDITIONS AND INJURIES EXPLAINED

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, 75-77% of Americans have experienced foot pain at some point in their lives. It’s not surprising considering that each foot has 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments, that the average person walks around 7500 steps per day, and when running up to 4 times your body weight can be the pressure amount placed on your feet.  Put all of that together and it’s no wonder that feet are prone to injury and are at high risk for developing a wide variety of painful conditions.

DR. COHEN’S PICKLEBALL SHOE LIST

A good pickleball shoe provides support for your feet and ankles to help prevent injuries. Some important features of a great pair of pickleball shoes include grippy outsoles to help reduce sliding, stability to stabilize the feet and ankles for lateral movements and quick stops and starts, and excellent cushioning to absorb impact. Regular shoes or shoes made for walking and running are not recommended for pickleball because they are not suitable for the types of directional movements that playing pickleball requires.

STRONG FEET AND ANKLES = STRONGER ATHLETES

Did you know that the dynamic relationship between the foot’s arch, bones, ligaments, and muscles creates the ability to absorb up to four hundred times the body’s weight? Or that the body converts all of this force into functional movement (walking, running, jumping)?  It is for all the above reasons (and more) that having strong feet and ankles is critical for optimal sports performance and injury prevention.

DR. COHEN’S BASKETBALL SHOE LIST - 2024

If you ask anyone who follows basketball, they’ll tell you that the game has changed so much.  The biggest change is that it has become a positionless game in recent years.  Centers are dribbling and passing more, and guards are posturing big moves and scoring more than they facilitate.  So probably one of the biggest factors when choosing your basketball shoe is your style of play as well as your position.
